Problems With Wisdom Teeth?
Wisdom Teeth normally erupt between the ages of 18-24. Many people are unaware that they have wisdom teeth until it starts piercing through the gums. As humans are evolving our jaws are getting smaller as our diets are much more refined than that of our ancestors. As such there is little room for wisdom teeth to come through causing them to be impacted.
Did you know that impacted wisdom teeth can lead to all kinds of oral health problems including pain, swelling, bad breath and infections? They can move and damage the surrounding teeth and if left untreated, the infections can spread resulting in a multitude of other health problems.
When Do You Need To Have Your Wisdom Teeth Removed?
Wisdom teeth may need to be removed if they have the following problems:
- Infection: When an impacted wisdom tooth starts to push through, it can irritate the skin around it making it red and swollen (Pericoronitis). This inflammation or infection of the gum can often be painful and cause stiffness of the jaw
- Crowding: An impacted Wisdom Tooth can cause movement of nearby teeth away from the original position
- Cysts: Fluid-filled sacs or cysts can sometimes develop around unerupted wisdom teeth. These cysts can grow larger in size if not removed, damaging the bone and jaw around it
- Damage to molars: Wisdom teeth erupting at an angle can push against adjacent molars damaging both teeth in the process
- Difficulty cleaning them due to reach
Post-Extraction Care
Proper aftercare is crucial to ensure optimal healing and prevent complications.
Immediate Aftercare: Avoid rinsing or spitting for the first 24 hours post-surgery to protect the forming blood clot. Refrain from using straws, as the suction can dislodge the clot. Limit vigorous exercise during this period to reduce bleeding risks.
Oral Hygiene: You may brush your teeth the night of the surgery, but rinse gently. Starting the day after surgery, rinse your mouth 5–6 times daily with warm salt water, especially after meals, to keep the extraction sites clean. Be cautious to avoid disturbing the gum tissue around the surgical area.
Dietary Recommendations: Stick to soft foods and avoid anything hard, sticky, or chewy for several days after the procedure. Avoid straws, eating on the side of the extraction, and sugary, caffeinated, alcoholic beverages. Soft foods and a lot of water are your friends.
Monitoring for Complications: Be vigilant for signs of a dry socket, a condition where the blood clot is dislodged, exposing the bone and nerves. Symptoms include severe pain radiating to the ear or temple. If you experience such symptoms, contact us promptly for evaluation and management.
How can we help?
Many dentists in Sunshine Coast will refer patients to get their wisdom teeth removed under a general anaesthetic (where patients are put to sleep) because they do not have the training and expertise to conduct safe wisdom tooth extractions under a local anaesthetic in the dental chair. General anaesthetic adds costs such as private hospital and anaesthetist fees and in most cases these costs can be avoided by having your teeth removed while you are awake, using a local anaesthetic.
At Dentistry On Coolum, Dr Gohil has had extensive training and experience in the safe and effective practices of removing these wisdom teeth under local anaesthetic. These procedures can be done safely in chair, the patient is completely numb and will feel no pain! Dr Gohil and his team have successfully removed thousands of impacted wisdom teeth over their career helping patients suffering from wisdom teeth pain or taking care of it before they become a problem.
Dr Gohil also mentors young dentists around QLD in safe effective removal of wisdom teeth. If you live on the Sunshine Coast and are having trouble with your wisdom teeth, a consult with Dr Gohil will provide you with your best treatment options. If you have been referred to have your wisdom teeth removed and are unable to meet the costs or simply just a second opinion, feel free to book a consultation with our Dental Surgeons to discuss ALL YOUR OPTIONS.
